"Hit it Right"

I read a readers comment in the Herald yesterday regarding the current state of affairs for people in NZ.

"If petrol costs to much - walk, If bread costs to much - make your own, If veges cost to much - make a garden, If electricity costs to much - turn off the TV and play games with your kids, If you get cold - put a jumper on. Stop moaning and get active".

Great advice. It is simple and straight to the point. How often do we complicate things? - in my experience far to often. I read a story once about the great golfer Ben Hogan who was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter :-

Reporter: "Mr Hogan you played a beautiful shot on the 16th down the right of the fairway. With the trees, bunkers and water hazards down the left side of the fairway, what were you thinking as you approached the shot?

Hogan: "hit it right".

Doesn't take a nuclear physicist or a brain surgeon to figure that one out. How many "hit it right" moments have you had lately. My observations are that the more you are involved in something the less likely you are to have "hit it right" moments.

The key to creating "hit it right" moments is to embrace simplicity. This does not mean dumbing things down. It means looking at things from all angles and with an open mind. It means looking for simplicity before looking at anything else.

When you see a space shuttle lift off, it looks very impressive and for us mere mortals it is something that is complex and requires a flight commander with two or three PhD' s who has done years of training just for that task. For that flight commander however, it is a simple task to fly the space shuttle because they have practiced and trained and practiced some more.

Our own space shuttle experience occurs when we learn to drive a car. So many things to think about and so many coordinated activities requiring all of our senses. But after a short while we undertake some of the most sophisticated bio-mechanical, psychological and technical activities we will ever do in our lives with "hit it right" simplicity. We will almost do it on auto pilot.
